Someone hit my car - trying to pay cash

  • I had something similar a few years ago with a young girl running into the back of me. No issues about liability, but she didn't want to go through insurance due to premium increase etc... my experience is I would never settle privately again. I got 3 quotes from local body shop repairers and sent them to her. I then I had visits and phone calls from the boyfriend and "friends" to check the damage who could repair my car much cheaper. Her in tears guilt tripping me about how expensive it was (circa £600). I vowed I would never do a young driver a favour again, it was not worth the hassle.

p.s I did report it to my insurer immediately, but informed them we would be settling privately. In the end she paid up only because I gave her an ultimatum to pay for the repairs (garage directly) or I would be going through insurance.

I would be in tears if I had to pay ourt £600 for damage I caused someone else's car - thats why you pay for insurance.

I wouldnt entertain settling privately unless I had no intention of repairing the car and they can prove they have access to £1000 cash in the bank.

OP - Been through a similar situation myself , the other driver eventually admitted liability and his insurance paid out but i will have to declare it "notification only " for the next 5 yrs.

My Forester was written off in feb this year. I claimed direct off the third party insurer but did notify my own. Bought the Forester back(155) and repaired it(350). Today I have renewed the Forester insurance for £158 fully comp increased the mileage from 5000 yr to 8000. No change in premium
  • She waited, Id say shes honest.

Wouldn't matter me if she wanted to pay for the repairs direct. I show her a quote, she gives me the money. End of.

I've had this happen to the wifes car and as it was a bang to the boot and lights but the car was not that great anyway, just gave the cash to the wife to spend on something nice. I paid a few quid to replace the light.

Some people just want to avoid excesses and claims for minor doinks ( I don't know how bad yours was )

Downside is that you've already notified insurance company so the accident is on your record and you'll get little benefit from not having a claim.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.
