I asked that but he was sure it went whilst in bar. I think we need the statement when he gets home. Thank you for all your comments.
Can he not use internet banking or call the bank to obtain these details now?

He's checked his account when he came home and the money has reappeared. Don't know what was going on but thank you for all comments.

Probably for the ladies involved yes, it can be chilly this time of year. Also what Tadley said.

Still I understand you're a worried mother/father. Firstly, relax. Life is dull if things never go wrong.

Secondly - the short answer is that if it was chip and pin then it is extremely unlikely that it was some sort of 'hack.' Whilst it's technically possible for that to be the case, it's about as likely as being eaten by a shark...in Amsterdam.

Cloning a card is relatively easy, stealing the pin with a small camera on a machine is also relatively easy.

Cloning a chip is not. It's very, very complicated. If the payments were made by magnetic strip and signature the bank would probably accept it's fraudulent pretty quick, but if it's chip and pin and he still has the card on him then the bank is very unlikely to offer a refund.

Sorry if it isn't what you want to hear but at best there's more to this story.
That's odd as about a month before this thread was originally started I paid for a train ticket on board a train and used chip and pin, then later found an unusual amount of money had gone, yet the bank (Halifax) were quick to refund me and issue a replacement card. :o
