Annual holiday insurance query

Hi
I'm getting myself confused with holiday insurance. I have annual European cover for 2016 so if I go away this year I'm covered if I travel or if I need to cancel. I get that bit.
In January I'm travelling to Italy and in April I'm travelling to the USA. I'm debating getting annual again but to include the USA as this will probably work out cheaper.
This is where I start getting confused. If I take out annual for the USA in January 2017 I'm not covered now. So if something happens between now and January (when the cover starts) what do I do?
Also am I covered now until December for the Italy trip as I have European cover currently (even though it finishes before the trip)?
Help please & sorry if it's a daft question.

You currently have no cover for trips to USA - so if anything happens between now and January you have no cover at all, and if something does happen (eg medical condition), between now and January, then you may not be able to take out cover in January meaning you either cancel or travel uninsured
Regarding your Italy trip you are now covered against cancellation till your policy expires. (IE if you need to cancel for any reason covered by the policy, then provided you do so before it expires in December it will be covered)0
