How can it record when you've switched the power off?

I Switch it off at night and then back on again in the morning.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. We have a good signal, and never have problems watching "live" TV. We always check the schedule in advance of the evening's programmes.

Anyway, Sky have now enabled the free channels for six months, so we'll return the Humax and take time to think alternatives after that.

If you're going back to Sky, too late now but Humax are generally considered one of the best for Freesat/Freeview HD recorders. If you look at the hummy.tv forums, you'll see there isn't loads of people having problems with missing recordings so it's not something that's a common fault. You could've contacted Humax for support and seen what they'd suggested before giving up on it.

If the signal power is good, I'd have tried a factory reset, then made sure it was running the latest firmware, and then contacted Humax if it was still an issue.

To be honest, the Sky offer came at just the right time - free for six months, PLUS (fingers crossed) a refund on the Humax. And a recorder we trust.

The Humax firmware is up-to-date, but we could try a factory reset and still not be certain the issue was resolved, several weeks down the line.

I also have a sky box and I always switch off at night and then on again in the morning. It is totally reliable and never misses a recording. When I am on holiday I leave the sky box on stand-by and it never misses a trick.

Just read "debitcardmayhem" who says that "the hdr performs "housekeeping" at 3am . powering off negates that". Never knew that but if that is the case then you must be expected to leave the box on 24/7.

When I check my utility bills my energy company keeps telling me that I will save money by switching things off instead of leaving them on standby.

Comparing my sky box to the humax I have to say that I find sky much easier to run. o/p have you tried for a deal with Sky? I only pay less than half price for the basic channels plus all the sports channels.

Well yes, that's why I was surprised that you're turning it off.

If you turn it off at night, that must mean that you can't record anything that's on after you go to bed.

It's good advice generally, but a DVR is the exception to that advice. Switch almost everything else off.

    Is this of help?

Thanks. The recording problem may well revolve around some power issue; however, I don't know if those posts relate to the current software. We left those settings at the default options.

If it were just the slow start-up, I wouldn't worry. But any power option (other than switching it off at the wall), which prevents scheduled recording makes it "not fit for purpose".

The box has now been returned.
