All you Ol'Stylers out there! Who would like to go back in time to give it a go living in a different era ala 1800's house and 1940's house etc.
I was recently trotting around the Castle Museum in York looking at all the room sets and got talking to Mrs MATH about going back in time. I would love it and she would hate it. When pressed the earliest date I could get her to consider travelling to was 1986:rolleyes:
Here is my ticket request.

Here is my ticket request.
- Anytime between 1820 and 1959.
- First or second class only. I don't want to find myself down pit for 23 hrs a day, have scurvy or keeping ferrets.
- One month visit with the option to extend it if I like it.
- That Mrs MATH and I can continue with our role reversal life-style that has suited us just fine for the last decade. I am prepared to make sacrifices by GOING OUT TO WORK is a step toooooo far:eek:

Not quite time travel but I was saying only this morning that I'd like to see how I'd cope on a desert island for a couple of months, maybe with a convenient swiss army knife & some sun block in my pocket but other than that just relaying on nature & myself. Does that count? Oh no, going way off topic before it's even got started...Sorry, please put it down to hormones & ignore me. Back to Math's post, which at least is related to Old Style:oPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

What are the time traval rules?
Can I get all my immunisations first?I've made my debts bite-size too depressing to look at all at once so am handling them one at a time - first up Graduate Loan £1720 paid off! only £280 to go!!!
Money to raise for tuition fees: £3000
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on!!0 -
You make the rules - state which era and then add any restrictions that would make the trip acceptable to you.Life's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

Does the time machine have internet access?
Has it ever occured to anyone that we call ourselves Old Stylers but are fairly dependent on our PC's & chat forums to bring this lifestyle about......modern Old Stylers prehaps? Sorry.....going off topic AGAIN.......slap on wrist. I'm going to have to get off of this forum & do some work, it's the only way I'll re-focus:oPost Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

Any time in the Victorian era.
But I'll be a posh parlour lady who spends her days cross-stiching by candle light
Oh, and I'll be able to hide my big bum under all those fancy dresses
Either that or travel back to my Grandma's youth (1930's) because they lived the self sufficiency livestyle on a small holding in the country and the biggest job of the month was to kill a pig (the blokes did that bit) then get on your bike and cycle round the village handing out bits of it. And when the neighbours killed a pig you got a bit of theres back, it was all about sharing in the community thenWhen life hands you a lemon, make sure you ask for tequilla and salt0 -

I think that I'm with Galtizz on the 1930's so long as it is like all of the Agatha Christie films and TV progs..... I would be very foresighted and wrap all the Clarice Cliff''s tea sets and Charlotte Rhead's vases that I bought for 12/6 and put them away until I came back to 2005 and ebay them......(I don't know if I've fully entered the spirit of this....)0

Id like to live in the 1920's like the Milly Molly Mandy books and live on a small holding too(The nice white cottage with the thatched roof would just suit me). I think I could handle washing and ironing if I had my sister and brother in law there to help with other jobs,my OH to do the crops and my rosy-apple-cheeked elderly father and mother to lend a hand a baby sit.
Wouldnt worry about there being no tv,radio or pc I'd be too busy.0 -
I also rather fancy the 1930s. That is, as long as I am not in the kind of situation that forced the Jarrow march & general strike etc. The "Agatha Christie" lifestyle would be fine... as long as no murder is involved.
In that period you have the best of both worlds I think. There is still the community spirit in the villages & towns, but there is also better health care (and I would of course time-travel to a situation where I could afford it!) and telephones etc. Mind you, I could post letters & be fairly sure of them arriving the next day, or even the same afternoon.
And I could travel by steam train! (first class, of course)
Mind you, there is a snag. I would of course want to come home before 1939.
In order to have really enjoyed the lifestyle (of the wealthy) in the 1920s & 30s it would have involved living through 2 world wars. While it is all very interesting to look back at ration book recipes from the safety of the 21st century, I'm not sure I would like to experience air raids & family separation or bereavement & the other horrible experiences of wartime.0
