I make the sauce exactly that way but maybe add al litte bit of a vegetable stock cube (quarter to a half of one maybe) and a pinch of mixed spice or nutmeg. Tastes lovely and the kids eat loads. Have now trained No1 son to make it himself which he manages very well.0

Yep I'd just go for a stronger cheddar next time and english mustard, that brings the flavour out beautifully. (packet cheese sauce smells like baby sick parmesan to me - sorry!! Tastes OK though):wave:0

that was the main reason for me trying to make it, the packet stuff makes me heave it smells really bad......but then as mine didnt smell, thought i had done it wrong, then it looked different so my son turned his nose up at it lol0

I know what you mean about the smell....it's rank!
If I make cheese sauce, I usually go for the roux method. Once the sauce is made, remove it from the heat, then add the grated cheese and english mustard. No mustardy bits for said child to turn his nose up at!! Perhaps you should use white mature cheddar then it will be as pale as packet stuff.:wave:0 -
when ive time i make the sauce from scratch when i dont have time i use a jar of white sauce and add cheeseNamed after my cat, picture coming shortly0
