Chaps payment delayed with nationwide bank

I have sent Chaps payment to my solicitor through nationwide bank since Friday 16September. On Friday morning received a call from nationwide to say my payment has been withheld with HSBC bank but they don't know the reason and they will find out that on Monday. On Monday a call from nationwide bank asking me HSBc need my date of birth and purpose of sending the fund and residence address and occupation gave that information Monday at 9:30am then nationwide called me at 4pm on Monday to say my fund will go to solicitor by 5pm Monday or by Tuesdays Noon but still now end of Tuesday the solicitor have not received the fund.. Has anyone else experienced this problem

  • If the story is true as you state then it derserves a loud complaint to Nationwide.
You were paying them for a specific service ie same day payment of funds which did not happen.

IMO it was up to Nationwide to ask the questions before the payment was processed.
So unless there is something missing in the story phone them to start a complaint.
  • On Monday I was at 9:30am nationwide bank called me to say their chaps payment go through HSBC and HSBC needed that information about D.B.O residence address and occupation. ON Monday 4pm nationwide told me the fund will transfered by 5pm Monday or Tuesday Noon. By Tuesday noon called nationwide they said they have provided the requested information is actually the receiving bank need that information but have been provided and we are waiting for them to accept the payment.. Nationwide are telling me they are done their job but the receiving requested those information and they send money to HSBC and HSBC was asked those information by Barclays is the receiving bank....... I'm really confused now don't what to do .........

Sounds like one or both of the banks are doing AML checks, so they won't tell the OP exactly why they have requested the information. I would hope that Nationwide would refund the CHAPS fee but other than that I don't think there's much you can do other than wait for it to complete.

Nationwide is a building society, not a bank.

This means its banker HSBC is the one transferring the funds and it can delay a transfer if it wishes to satisfy itself of the ultimate source of funds.

Using a clearing bank would have removed a link in the chain, but often such things only come to light when an issue like this arises.

  • Nationwide is not a participant of CHAPS scheme so a delay is not totally unexpected and it seems they use HSBC and HSBC want to run an AML check on you.

Nothing to worry about really, it's definitely stressful given the amount of money at stake.
  • How will they identify the source of fund if the fund is coming from nationwide ... it is only 35k .. I made a mistake to use chaps I should have used fast payment 10k each
