Asda grocery delivery -earlier than booked.

Options
I'd booked for between 3- 5 pm as I knew I'd likely not get home before 3pm. I got an email early this morning saying my delivery was on schedule and had been picked/packed.

Turns out I did get home early, around 2.15pm and when I checked my emails, Asda had sent another saying 'Your delivery is available earlier than planned'. There was no option to tell them whether or not this was suitable, and the delivery man arrived just after 2.30pm.

I'm wondering what would have happened if I hadn't got home early. If the driver found the house empty and had to bring it all back to the store, would I still be charged?

If you mean "would i still have to pay for shopping i didn't receive and not get a refund because I wasn't in to take early delivery" no. Because that would be making you liable for their breach of contract. But whether asda would redeliver at the scheduled time or just cancel the order (with the latter you might end up being charged and refunded), I genuinely don't know.

The rosy tinted glasses would say they should redeliver at the contracted time but I know things don't always happen the most sensible way so you'd be best asking asda.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride
  • I know Ocado call if they can come early, and you can either accept the earlier delivery or they'll return at the later time (although that sometimes means they are sat outside your house for a while).

All bets are off when it comes to ASDA, though, they don't seem to make systems based on logic...

Our Asda deliveries sometimes come earlier than booked, simply because it suits the driver at that time based on his route and prior deliveries. It has happened before that they've come when we've been out - apart from one time*, they've always come back during the booked slot.

    * They refunded the shopping and delivery charge, and we re-booked.
  • Asda turned up to our house half an hour early, our 15 year old was in but obviously they wouldnt allow him to take delivery. They litterally had to wait (and they did with good grace) for me to return, which i did 5 mins before my slot time.
Delivery guy was fine with it and was still smiling when i arrived, but i cant say it will be the case for all drivers, some of them look liked they have chewed a wasp!

  • They would just come back later on at your time slot. No harm in trying earlier though. If not they just get a mini break in the van. I guess it makes for extra travelling time or an earlier finish for them if your in, they can be very hard pressed for time.

They would still charge you as the money is taken out usually when it leaves the store, refunds take a 3-5 days, so they would no doubt try to redeliver so not to lose stock + cash.

I just cancelled my order as the driver said I wasn't in (I was AND listening for him) and I has therefore rejected the delivery. When I rang customer services, although it was still well within my delivery slot I was offered the next day 10 to12. I explained that as I work full time this would not suit and cancelled the order. (this is not the first instance of this) They told me that I would not have been charged so no refund would be due but it was up to me to liase with my bank. So, what do you think, will I be down the money and if so how long does it take to get back? :(

Sounds like the bank may have the amount "pending" in which case it either automatically goes back within a few days, or you'll need to ring your bank.

Until that is done nobody knows :p
