Hey
I have just taken over as treasurer for a hall management committee.
Basically the hall they run is a meeting place for the local scout and guide association.
So i look after the bills etc take membership for each paying child with the scouts and guides and maintenance for the building.
obviously all the scout and guide groups that meet at the hall are registered as a charity but we are not.
Is it possible that the hall committee can register as a charity?
I have been pulling my hair out looking at the rules to register but its so confusing and they give no telephone number to ring and speak to anyone.
Im sure there are other people in the same situation and if so which of the 13 reasons did you choose to be a charity.
much appreciated

It is possible that yes, you could register 'the hall' as a charity. I'd start by googling 'volunteer' plus your town / city / county, and see if you have a local voluntary services council who could help point you in the right direction - if you can't find one, then there is a lot of useful info on the VOSCUR site (my local) which you could browse for free ...
Note that it's not for the faint-hearted: the management requirements for charities are quite stringent.
The other question to ask is how it would actually benefit you? Looking for some pro bono legal advice might also be useful.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Tom - as the new Treasurer may I suggest a review of your gas and elec bills; your insurance for the building and for the management committeeNever pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Hi
Who owns the Hut? Is it the scouts & guides or someone else ?
You say obviously the scouts & guides are charity registered. That's not my experience, where I am only those that own a building are a registered charity whereas those that meet in eg a church hall aren't registered in their own right but use the district charity number when needed.
