Help pressie for 70yr old mother in law ((be nice))

Options
Hi Guys
MIL is 70 in november and trying to come up with good ideas for her pressie (she has been good to us through the last few yrs) would like to get her something different and special

here are the ruled out ideas((( so far )))

Holiday --- just come back off two - and has no partner to go with
Jewellery-- not very thoughtful and has loads
theatre trip -- got one last year of other daughter #
Does not want a party!!

I like the idea of doing a memory book with old photos in it (them hardback ones you can get done) but how would I get the photos off her without knowing unless I be upfront ... but lost the surprise then

Any ideas or suggestion to help me would be most grateful:beer:

You could do a family photo of all her children and grandchildren if you think you can get them all together at once :) Put in a nice frame and viola! You could get a HUGE frame and get pictures of everyone as kids and growing up and do a collage. I'm sure your husband and his sister must have SOME pictures you could use?

Or you could buy her a voucher to have HER photo taken? Or a spa day... I have just ordered one for myself with some vouchers I had that needed to be used and I am SO looking forward to it!!

You could just have one nice photo put on to canvas for her - that looks really nice and she'd probably think it was quite different. I think you can get them done for about £25.

If money is no object then I could recommend a trip on the Orient Express and you could accompany her. We all clubbed together for my parents' golden wedding anniversary and OH and I were the ones lucky enough to accompany them. It was fantastic - experience of a lifetime.

I'd also be interested in suggestions as my MIL is 70 next year. She has no interests, doesn't like spa days, never seems to enjoy it if we take her to the theatre - it's very difficult coming up with ideas!
  • If you like the memory book idea try treasureyourpics.com had our wedding album done really nice and you can enter text etc aswell. I have a piccy of the church singer in my album and a copy of the hymm lyrics down the side. And i think they are not too expensive

I think this idea is fab or you could change it slightly by doing a photo of all the grand children on canvas, for my mother in law i gave her three silver phot frames with 3 different pictures of my daughter at different stages during her first year which she loved and they now take pride on her living room wall.

How about some things to make her more comfortable? I got partner's 80-yr-old mum an inflatable bath pillow for xmas last year - was a big hit. When I find things to help make life a wee bit easier at an advancing age, I grab them. So far, i've found things like:

    - micro umbrella to fit in handbag
    - jar opener rubber thingy (don't know what they're called!)
    - magnifying reading strip that lies on the page

As partner's mum has vision probs, we gave her a membership to Audible.co.uk so she can choose audio books - this has been great, too (we do all the computing, downloading and cd burning for her).

Does she have a garden? You might think about 70 flower bulbs (and planting them for her!!) - tulips or crocuses? (They can be ordered on line)

    Hope this helps.

  • How about a little white lie and say the children (if you have any) need photos etc for a school project? That way you can ask lots of questions too without her realising its a surprise for her.

How about a day trip on the Orient Express ?
Not cheap but you mentioned a holiday which wouldn't be cheap either and they do trips to all sorts of events from both London and the North silver service meals -a real trip back in time to a more elegant age.

  • How about a balloon flight, glider lesson, day at the races
or if you have a nice picture of her that she likes have it copied by an artist in water colour or pencil.
A cd recording of each member of the family telling her how much she means to them with a little personal memeory of them both.
Better still a dvd with pictures of the lady with the person speaking.

  • For my Grandma's 90th we took her to have a photo taken of her with her daughter and four granddaughters. She loved it and is very proud of the picutre which now hangs on her wall. It was a suprise as the picture was taken actually on her birthday, and she really looked forward to receiving the print - extended the pleasure of her birthday a little if you see what I mean!

  • For MILs recent 70th birthday we paid for her and a friend to go to have tea at the ritz and train fare which was thrilled with but depends on what part of the country you live we are only about an hour and a half away love the photo ideas though
