Like people 'chose' to be slaves rather than die?0 -
it would help if your question was clearer as to what context you are asking about:
personal experiences...
- as the LL letting to the middleman and now finding out the subletting clause has been breached and rent is in arrears?
- as the occupant paying the middleman and now trying to get a deposit back because the LL has found out and is trying to evict?
- as the middleman subletting with / without permission, registering or not registering the tenant deposit?
I am trying to find out the pros and cons of “Rent to Rent” from the context of how it actually works.
From what I can ascertain, a person could rent a property and then subsequently sub-let said property.
Even to the point of sub-letting to multiple tenants (with the correct license of course).
Landlords can get a guaranteed income with a hands off approach.
Middlemen have the stress of finding tenants, making the payments regardless of occupancy, etc.
Their returns are greater for multiple occupancy.
Occupant – no real difference for them unless they use a cowboy
Is that the gist of it?
Do you have any experience in this field?
Can you offer any advice at all?0 -

I suppose, the point being that when pushed people would rather face a miserable life than a death, or overcrowding rather than homelessness
Of course its immoral that people don't have better opportunities, but what may appear unacceptable to one person is the best another has got
People badmouth slavery but really, abuse removed, some modern jobs are little more than that if they live hand to mouth, we just use money to make it acceptable and sell the capitalist dream, but the numbers mean any vague sort of equality is practically unattainableThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. The danger with riding the moral high ground is not seeing how people are supported by these 'evil' systems, even slavery to a degree, at least fed people who may otherwise not be fed, they were part of an economy, but paid with food and shelter rather than moneyThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. The HMO provider is just providing people with more housing options than they would otherwise have, they're not responsible for the environment of povertyThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Or the other way to view it is they are taking advantage of said environment..0 -

An HMO provider is legally responsible for ensuring the property is safe and habitable. It's not particularly helpful to lump those who provide safe and maintained HMO accommodation with the likes of Mustafa Kemal Mustafa who crammed 40 people in a property with a licence for a maximum of 12 with conditions so dangerous the electricity board cut the power off to the building.
Comparing slavery to low paid modern jobs is like comparing apples with oranges. Slaves are property and those they work for are their owners. Those in low paid modern jobs do have opportunities to better their situation through training & qualifications as well as changing employer or perhaps starting their own business. Options and opportunities that are not afforded to slaves.0 -
Of course, but they're not charities, they need a little motivation to provide services
Its like you wouldn't lend money to an unknown person without some sort of compensation for the risk you're taking and that you can't access your assets while you lend it, and in the case of landlords/HMOs they're lending property /space, they take the risk of damage or default and surrender access to the space they're lending. This profit has to be worthwhile compared to other investmentsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
The flexibility is a key difference with slavery, good point, though some people are stuck in one sort of unskilled work or another, in a way they'll be more motivated to work harder for their employer than slaves since they chose the job and the bit of money they handle may be enough to make them feel less exploitedThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
