I bank with First Direct and have recently received two payments into the account both referenced IPSWICH, one for 7.57 and one for 2.22. As it is a joint account I'm presuming one may be mine and the other my husband's? I know it's not a great deal of money but I would just like to know where they have come from and why, I rang First Direct who told me they have a lot more details when money is taken from an account but as it is a credit all they can see is what I see. Any comments?

I would expect them to be able to trace the origin of the funds. A bank giro credit paid over the counter would be slightly tricky but they should still be able to get hold of the paying in slip. If it's a faster payment then they would have the remitters account number and sort code but this might not be available to whoever you spoke to.
I would firstly ask what type of credit it was and if it's a faster payment then I'd personally ask them to return it. As you say, it's not a large amount but if you don't know what it is it's best not to take it as it might become a regular payment and then it could become tricky.0 -
I do agree, I was a bit taken aback when told they couldn't see any more info than me - just IPSWICH - I'll try again. The important things in life are not things ........0

Where do you live?
Could it be a refund from Ipswich council (if it exists) Is there an Ipswich B/Soc?0 -
I do live fairly near Ipswich but it is not my local council, I don't pay anything to them, if there is an Ipswich BSoc I have never had an account with them. The important things in life are not things ........0

I wonder then if someone paid cheques into an account at Ipswich branch of your bank and someone put your account number on the credit in error.
This might not be viewable by the telephone team.0 -

First Direct and HSBC credits show as CHQ IN AT [Sort code]. It wouldn't be this.urs sinserly,

Also I'm thinking if it was an official/gov/council refund (which I can't see how it can be, as I've said I'm nothing to do with Ipswich in that way) then they almost certainly have a reference number. I'm not going to call again - I will message them now - and let you know any response. The important things in life are not things ........0

This is my reply received from First Direct:
The credit for 2.22 & 7.57 pounds came under description IPSWICH quoting reference Compensation. This credit came from National Westminster Bank PLC.
If you have any further queries related to this credit please contact them as they are the remitting Bank.
Curiouser and curiouser, I do not and never have had an account with Nat West, compensation?! I've a mind to leave it now but ........
Oh just realised Nat West paid in for Ipswich, bank irrelevant, so still none the wiser then! The important things in life are not things ........0
