If Someone is Living with you Free of Charge what are the Legal Considerations

Someone is moving in with me FoC in order to save for a mortgage. Will this increase any of the taxes etc. I need to pay?

Do I have to register them?

Obviously bills will increase but they are family so I am happy to cover electricity etc if they get their own food etc.

(New thread: too many comments on the practical aspects of this living arrangement) :money:

I don't know if it's nationwide, but my council had a council tax discount of 25% for those living alone, so you'd potentially be paying more council tax.

of course it is nationwide, surely you know that ?

if OP is currently claiming Single person Discount (SPD) for their council tax that will of course have to stop and he must inform his council that there are now 2 people in occupation. He will thus have to pay the full rate not the 75% discounted rate. If he fails to self declare and the council finds out later that would be fraud

A rather snarky response to what was intended to be a helpful reply. If I knew it was nationwide I wouldn't have said "I don't know if it's nationwide". Surely you knew that?

Scotland, Wales, NI all potentially have their own arrangements for these type of matters.

It's the same in Scotland and Wales. In Northern Ireland they pay rates not council tax.
  • I believe there has been mention recently on this sub-forum of anyone else living in a house (ie besides the householder) is legally deemed to have a right to a say about it if the householder does something like sell the house?

Can anyone refresh memory on that point?

Don't know if this might be something OP needs to consider (or whether he doesnt plan on moving for quite some time anyway).
