It's very common for houses and garages to have asbestos in and it isn't a worry when it's somewhere you aren't going to be accessing daily or drilling into. Just be careful when getting it disposed of.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

When you were told some aspects of the wiring were no longer allowed this doesn't actually mean it needed replaced, it means any new building would not be allowed to be fitted in that way under current regulations.
You've an old house and unexpected costs will arise during the settling in period.0 -
Since moving in we were advised to get a rewire as some aspects of the wiring were no longer allowed.
Probably 99% of houses in the UK have "some aspects of the wiring were no longer allowed" because the regulations change every few years. However that does not mean that the electrics are/were unsafe. It sounds like someone has realised you are a worrier and had a nice little earner of a rewire out of you...Every generation blames the one before...

That is very true in the wiring. We had a new fuseboard put in on 29/12 and by 15/01 it was out of date as they bought in new regs.0

Thank so much for the comments everyone!
I hear what you're saying about the rewire but it was a very good friend who advised us. We had sockets and switches still on the skirting boards and it was ancient. Out thinking was, no point in decorating then when something goes wrong all the hard work being undone with raffled walls etc and floors lifted for a rewire.
Believe it or not I'm usually quite a laid back person but the asbestos when I have two young kid in the house struck a chord! It's been tested and we know it's asbestos cement board. The company say it's safe for the boiler to be removed without disturbing it but think I'll pay to get it disposed of anyway.
I'm away to post about central heating systems now!
Thanks again!0 -
Yup my dad is one of them that as a young man worked with asbestos with no protective gear and then later again with asbestos but fully kitted out with protective gear.
And now he is a slow ticking time bomb, Mesothelioma and Asbestosis
There is different colour asbestos. White being the very bad one
Asbestos is ok if it's left alone, but if it needs removing say if you need a new boiler, then please don't go for a cheap quote, make sure who ever removes it is fully licenced to do so and dispose of it correctly and not dump it in a lane.
My mum and me have to have regular x-rays as we would of washed his clothes back then with the asbestos dust. So far we are ok. But dad it's too late for him and there is no cure. He's retired and taking it easy in France but we did nearly loose him 2 years ago when he collapsed and was in intensive care, thank god for the French hospital system, no messing around.
I thought white asbestos (chrysotile) was the least dangerous? And the one most often used in homes? My dad passed away from mesothelioma, so I'm sorry about yours. He was exposed during a long career as an elevator repairman.
ETA: Yes looked it up, white is obviously still a risk, but less of a risk than brown or blue asbestos. My father was exposed to the blue one when working in a very old building in the US.

Corrugated and sheet asbestos cement panels are used in millions of domestic outbuildings and older farm/industrial buildings. Certainly in the 1970s sheet asbestos was being used in internal fire doors. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

So glad you got it looked at and that it can be sorted. The house I'm buying comes with its own supply of asbestos so I know I'm going to have to go through the same thing shortly.0
