Smart Meter install, capped off cooker

Hi There

Just returned home to find that after installing my smart metres they have capped off my cooker because the hobs don't shut off when the glass cover is lowered, its an old cooker so I'm not surprised there are a few problems. They have confirmed this is the only reason and all the supplies etc to the cooker are fine.

Can I reconnect this and is it easy to do or do I need to call someone out (and will they reconnect it with this issue), we are in the process of having an extension and will be getting a whole new kitchen suite so dont want to buy a new cooker at this time.

Its annoying that I have been pressured into having these metres and they have left me with no cooker and possibly a call out fee for someone to reconnect it!

Thanks

I would suggest they are obliged to isolate any appliances which do not comply with current safety regulations. Only sensible, can't take risks with gas

Can you remove the glass cover?

Don't think it can be removed without tearing down the top of the oven as there are no visible screws

  • It's a safety device. You'll be breaking the law if you attempt to reconnect it or bypass it

There's a good reason why gas safe engineers have to abide by the regulations
  • Some cookers don't have a SSOV on the hob lid so you need to get someone to check if it has one or not, if it has then it's as bridgedino has just told you
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

It has been confirmed that it doesn't have that feature as the hob is so old and should not have been capped, therefore ive paid a callout charge for it to be reconnected for no reason what so ever, i couldn't do it myself as they had removed the bayonet fitting and capped it further down the pipe.

Do i just have to suck this one up or is it worth trying to get something out of BG? I couldn't wait for them to sort it out as i have children so needed the oven asap.

If I were you I'd be ring em, just for your information he must get your permission to remove the baynot & cap the pipe, if you had told him to do one then he would have had to phone grid who would have come out & looked & if it was as he said then they would cap it or the meter

He did get permission from my OH based on his information, they are ringing me today anyway to arrange to come in again as the actual smart meter couldn't be activated yesterday, didn't really understand why, the meter just says "Network Commission" when it is turned on.

E-On did the same with us, the chap told my OH that it was because the house was empty, but he was told it was only for 3 days until the new owners moved in. I rang E-On and he's told them that there was nothing in the house to test the gas supply with. Funny that he went & turned the boiler off and remarked on how nice the range (gas) cooker was. Anyway E-On ended up paying for our Gas Safe chap to come out and uncap it.
The smart meter wouldn't work until both gas & electric were connected to it.
  • I once had British Gas service my water heater, and when I came home from work I found that they had put a 'Dangerous Installation' sticker on it, and served an enforcement notice. Apparently it had been installed too close to the central heating boiler.

When I pointed out that it was British Gas who installed it and the boiler was already there at the time, they decided that it wasn't dangerous after all. :D
