Cancelling Sky - Moving Out

We're out of contract and about to move house. We've had 3 days notice on completion (we exchanged Friday) so as you can imagine we've not had a lot of time to contact suppliers.

We're out of contract with Sky, and now concerned that we move house tomorrow and they can't do anything to prevent the new owners using our Broadband and Telephone line until it's cancelled in 14 days. We can't transfer our account as we're moving in with family until our new home purchase is complete.

The TV package isn't so much of a worry as we're taking the box with us, but that's going to take the full month to cancel.

Question is: is there any way to do anything to prevent the new owners using our account when they first move in?

Are they inheriting your telephone number too? Just ask them not to use your 'phone!

As for using the Broadband, why will that be a problem? You will be paying for this regardless...
  • Good point about the Broadband.

I don't know about the phone line tbh. Just don't know what happens if they suddenly start making international calls while it's still our account.
  • I wouldn't want anyone using my broadband... i know most people are good, but there are a few that could be up to all sorts.

You can contact your supplier and ask for an immediate cease (it takes a coupe of days) to be put on your line - they can do it, but will be highly unwilling. You will most likely have to keep escalating your issue and you may well be charged. You would have to pay for your 30 days notice too.

    All sorts of what?
They won't have the OP's computer, just free broadband for a month!

It's no different to cafes and buses etc offering free wi-fi. Do people get up to "all sorts" on that?

Why would they do that when they can just Skype on the free broadband you're providing?!!;)

Regarding the broadband : I believe that taking your router with you would make things more difficult for the new occupier, as they won't have the code from the box.
  • I understand your concern, had the same problem in the past. Had to move house quick but still had a contract por phone and broadband ongoing for another month.
obviously it wont be much of an issue with the broadband, unless the new tenants use your broadband for fraud or terrorism. In that case you would be in trouble because it will be on your name. But you would take your modem anyway.
the biggest issue for me was the phone line. Even if you take your phone, the line will still be usable, and someone with bad intentions can give you a big bill on premium or international calls. What i did, and you have to be discreet about this, is disconnect the cables inside the phone socket. It wont work until the BT engineer finds the fault.
The new tenants will probably have problem setting up their own phone service, because there is an active service on that address.

They can't log on as you on Sky BB -unless you are foolish enuf to leave your pre-configured router or your log on details!
Phone is more tricky - an immediate cease is your only hope -or that your purchasers are honest!!
