So I got an email from SSE saying they are installing smart meters in my area and that I could phone for an appointment.

Well I have both gas and electric with SSE, I pay monthly and prefer this, Does smart meters keep this option or does it change to prepayment... I dont wish to go to prepayment meters...

Just tell them you're not having a smart meter. End of story. You are not obliged to have one. They won't force a PP meter on you unless you've not been paying your bills.

Think i'll just stick to my current meters and manual meter readings,

My gas is currently at £0.00 and electric £90 credit, So I'm not owing them anything the last time I was billed.

Been reading about smart meters and don't like the look of them. I don't find it hard or time consuming entering meter readings.

If your not currently on a prepayment meter then they wouldn't fit a smart prepayment meter in its place. You could continue to pay monthly as you are doing now. Your not required to have them installed yet but probably will do in the future.Personally i wouldn't have the smart meter installed until they have sorted out the SMETS 2.0 interchangeability, that allows them to be used by any supplier

    what have you read?

you are billed as normal, minus the estimates, the In Home Display shows you exactly what you're using, bills you correctly, and stops you wasting time with readings, and the installer does a safety check for gas leaks - no downsides
