32amp Connection from household 3 pin plugs

Hi all,

I run a small pop up ice cream business. The machines which I take to sites such as venues and markets, uses a lot of electricity naturally.

If I am at a large job where I use multiple machines, I would sometimes require a 16 or 32 amp round socket to feed the machines.

If I were to go to a venue which didn't have a generator which has these options naturally, and only household 3 pin plug socket, would there be some way of using an adapter to still use multiple 13amp 3 pin plugs?

I am imagining a double gang socket, where 2 x 3pin plugs feed off it, going into a 16/32amp round socket, which can the go to the machines.

I have a funny feeling this is completely not possible, but thought I'd throw the question out there anyway!

Thanks for the help folks
Andy

You cannot run 32amps off a 13 amp circuit no matter which way you wire it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • the circuit for sockets is rated at 32 amp (on breakers) but each plug can handle a max of 13amp. The problems you'd have even if you rigged up some dodgy contraption to use a number of plugs is that they would have to be fed on different circuits as 32amp is the max load and there is absolutely bound to be something plugged in somewhere using juice. You really cant start factoring in overload protection because you won't know whats on the circuit and any details about the cable run. I'd say unless you got someone to rewire a cooker circuit outlet you've got no chance. Too dangerous on a ring main.

  • Yes, it looks like adapters are available

The question is how much current does your equipment actually draw - are there any labels on the equipment with a stated power rating? You'll need to be careful not to overload the socket or the circuit they're on.
  • Thanks for the reply guys! Yeah I figured there wasn't a standard way of doing things, can't imagine having 2 13amp plugs feeding into a 16/32amp socket is a normal or safe option. Thanks for clearing that up!

What load rating are the appliances?

  • I believe each machine would be up to 3kw. On some occasions I would require 2 machines running, hence the higher power needs!

3KW is on the limit for 13A plug tops, what is the actual problem that req connection via a 32A commando arrangement - is the cable run excessive?

3KW is 13.04A @ 230v. This will be fine on any circuit in the UK if it is the only appliance running on the circuit.

if you want to run two machines from two 13A plugs, you need to a) ensure you are operating on a 32A ring final circuit or b) find two separate circuits and plug one machine into each circuit.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.
  • OP, sounds like you need to buy a generator capable of supplying the maximum electrical load you may need to draw, then you won't be dependent on what the site can provide.
