I know OP doesn't have travel insurance but how would it work if you had to cancel your holiday because of a non-travelling family member's illness?

My wife and I declare any pre-existing conditions asked about, but I don't recall being asked about parents etc. who aren't travelling with us. Should any relevant information be volunteered (if you know about something) or is it up to the insurer to ask?

Most policies will cover death/serious illness of a parent/sibling. A lot do ask during the application if there are any family members with pre-existing conditions whose death/serious illness would prevent you travelling.

Wording from a policy I took out this week
    Non-travelling Relatives
If You have a non-travelling Close Relative with a pre-existing medical
condition who dies or falls seriously ill and as a result You wish to cancel or
curtail Your Trip, You will be covered only if the Close Relative’s Medical
Practitioner states that at the time insurance was taken out he/she would
not have foreseen such a serious deterioration in his or her patient’s condition.

This policy will NOT cover any claims under Section 1 (Cancellation, Curtailment) arising directly or indirectly from any Pre-existing Medical Condition known to YOU prior to the commencement of the Period of Insurance affecting any close relative or travelling companion who is not insured under this policy, or person with whom you intend to stay with whilst on your trip if:

a terminal diagnosis had been received prior to the commencement of the period of insurance; or
they were on a waiting list for, or had knowledge of the need for surgey, inpatient treatment or investigation at any hospital or clinic at the commencement of the period of insurance; or

if during the 90 days immediately prior to the commencement of the period of insurance,
they required surgery, inpatient treatment or hospital consultations; or
they required any form of treatment or prescribed medication.

Have a good read of any policy you have, it could be in there somewhere!
Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear
  • Thank you Peachyprice. I'll check our policy wording as MIL is quite poorly
