Can I switch Home Insurance while a claim is open

Hello,

My home insurance policy is up for renewal in a week but a claim is still open and may taken another 8-9 weeks minimum. The renewal cost with present insurer has gone up by 80% so I want to switch to another one.

Please can someone tell me what might be the impact on my claim if I switch insurer while a claim is still open?

Thanks!

Yes - you can change insurers.

Although, depending on the type of claim, you might find it difficult to find another insurer who's willing to offer insurance at reasonable rates in these circumstances.
  • Just ensure when you are proposing the risk details either online or otherwise; for the claim value you put a best estimate. Your insurer handling the claim should be able to give you their latest reserve for the claim.
I suggest this because some insurers rate on claim value, and you need to demonstrate you are, to the best of your ability; proposing based on accurate information.
