Building a Small Shelf Advice

I want to mount my Virgin Media Superhub 2 on a wall.

I'm thinking of a small shelf, about 20cm long, by 10cm wide. I did a bit of messing about and created a piece of wood that was about those mesurements by about 6cm tall.

I planned to use the extra height to drill long screws into the wall, as the router isn't heavy, so it should be fine.

I'm thinking I should just head to B&Q and grab some cheapy MDF in the size I need and have done with it. While it perhaps wouldn't be the cheapest ever, surely it'll cost less than £10?

Would this be the best way of making a very small shelf?

Block on the wall is fine but you will need long screws or drill through the depth 60 or 70mm and use shorter screws or use mirror plates and short screws.

Alternately screw two bits of thinner wood together like this.

Could you hang it from the wall? Wrap wire around it then hang it from a hook.

Well, I was going to mount it pointing up, so the wires would come down in the middle of the wooden block, so I could attach them to the wall neatly. This is the result (used some old shelves as a test bed):

However, I have thought if I stood it up the right way, then all the wires would come out like a ponytail, so I could cable-tie all the wires together, thus only one line of wires neatly right in the corner so nobody will particularly see.

It's a shame there's no actual stand, otherwise I would have just mounted it upside down on the celing, although I'm not sure the power cable would then have been long enough!

Half way up the chimney breast should be okay.
