Sky failed to cancel

Hi my father in law was with virgin media for all his tv, broadband and phone. He spoke to a sky rep in a shopping centre who offered him a great deal (not too sure of the details).
Once agreed the rep confirmed that sky would deal with contacting virgin to cancel all off the above.
3 months later he has recieved a letter from virgin claiming he owes £280 for 3 months unpaid bills and late fees.
When we contacted virgin they said it wasnt their problem as they hadnt recieved any cancellation info.
We then contacted sky, as they had said they would do all the cancelling. To which we were told that they cant cancel anything on his behalf as they are not the account holder and the rep who dealt with him has worked for 9 years and would never have said they would cancel ... even though he did.
My father in law would have phoned himself to cancel virgin if he had been told to do so but didnt as sky said they would!
Does anyone know where we can go next with this as eventually it will start affecting his credit rating but we dont feel we should pay for it, sky should?

As far as I'm aware,Sky "reps" in shopping centres aren't directly employed by Sky -they are agency staff and will say virtually anything to get a sign up -I'm afraid you won't get anywhere with this -just pay up and move on before the debt collectors start making your F-I-L's life a misery!:(0
