iPhone 6 messenger problem

Hi all
I am hoping someone can help. My daughter has an iPhone 6s and has always used Messenger to chat to her friends. All of a sudden, instead of having the blue "lightning" symbol next to her name (which shows her as being online), she now has the grey "f" symbol, which I believe is an offline facebook symbol.
Her friend gets a message saying "invite XXXX to messenger" when they try to chat, even though my daughter has messenger. She has tried deleting the app and re-installing it but it's still not working.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't use FB messenger but from what you have said, she seem to have Chat option turned off - has she tried going into the Gear Icon (Settings) and toggling Chat option to ON?0
