Electric Shavers

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, so apologies in advance if it isn't!

Can anyone recommend a decent electric shaver? I have quite a tough beard growth, and last time I tried an electric shaver (about 20 years ago) they were pretty useless on anything but the lightest growth.

Have things improved since then? Is there now an electric shaver that comes anywhere close to a wet shave on a tough beard?

Many thanks.

I'd have to say no, things have not improved. I used to have one of the best philishaves and in comparison to a wet shave it's rubbish. It also broke. I've swapped to wet shaving permanently and it's more economical (replacement blades for electric shavers, and you do need to replace them are a fortune).

  • I don't wet shave as my skin is sensitive and prone to razor burn so i bought a electric braun one for around £90 and that was half price and over 2 1/2 years ago and its still going strong.
I've replaced the blades in it once which cost about £20.

I'd say electric is a better bet these days but you need to buy a good one.

I have sensitive skin as well and did have a Remington Intercept for sensitive skin. It was a good razor but it finally bit the dust about a year ago. I decided to get another Remington and bought a fairly cheap and chearful model and I must say that I am rather impressed with it. I think it was only £15ish ( nothing fancy, no battery - just mains )

If I shave every day then it's fine. But after a long period of not shaving ( 3-4 days ) then I still use a wet razor.

Electric shavers are one of the biggest 'electrical goods' ripoffs known to man (and, sometimes, women). Those of us who remember several years back will know them as costing around £20-£30, which is still expensive for some simple electronics and a linear motor. But now we are talking up to and beyond £100! Scandalous...

PS I can also get worked up about the price of electrical toothbrushes...!

PPS Back on topic, I certainly find that my 15-year-old Braun, even with a new cutter and new foil, doesn't readily remove tough hairs.
  • Once had a Foil shaver and it was rubbish. Have had Philishaves for the last 10 years and no problems,on saying that it does take time for your beard growth to adapt to the rotary action but find it better to shave with even if your skin is not completely dry.I bought my last one 2 years ago from amazon half price at £25.Really pleased with it up to now.

Pretty much agree with what's been said, I'm currently using a Braun 8995 Complete (with the cleaning station) and I've got rapid beard growth too!
It's the best I've used so far, but still not perfect.

    Pros:
It's quite a good quiet shave (when it's clean).
The battery on a full charges lasts a good 14 days, sometimes longer, so it's good for holidays not needing to lug extras around with it.
It's well made and solid, the LCD display shows exactly how much time and charge is left.
Once it's been cleaned using the cleaning station (automatically) it feels and sounds like new. That also helps kill bacteria and improve the shave.
I've had it just over 18 months and it's been reliable, just replaced the cutter and foil.

    Cons:

It doesn't catch all the hairs (despite the advertising), but I've never found one that does, it's better than my last one though.
It was hideously expensive something around £150 (the rrp is about £190!).
Cleaning cartridges are expensive, it wants an auto-clean every day, it only gets a full clean when it needs a charge!

A good site for prices and customer comments is http://www.shavers.co.uk
I've had excellent service from this company and we buy all our shavers and electric toothbrush parts from them too.

    Hope that helps :)

I agree, the shavers are only as good as the re-chargeable battery inside them and they normally last 2 years. I've been using Braun and find I get a good shave but you cannot replace the battery even though they look like soldered in AAs! I have kept the box, receipt, everything and if this one goes in 2years I'll be right back to the shop.

  • Been using an old Philips shaver for the past 12 years and still does it job. Blade has never been replace. Tho I only shave twice or 3 times a week at most.

Never tried a wet shave or those "Gillete" Machs.
