Garmin 56 satnav jammed

Plugged it into laptop to update maps, That's when the trouble started. Laptop says unknown device, Garmin express says connect device (it was connected) "Garmin express" shows on satnav screen and will not go away, satnav is now disconnected but it still shows. Satnav ignores it's power button and stays on, presumably till battery flat.
No idea what to do, hope someone can suggest something.
