Hello, I have a barclaycard platinum visa card.
I got it for a 0% balance transfer of debt. debt is almost paid off now. However I have decided I want a holiday for 14 days in florida, don't want to save up first, i'd rather put the cost on my credit card and just pay £500 a month when I get back from the holiday until it's paid off.
I would like to know if I can just use my platinum card to add the cost of this holiday for example, the car hire flights etc on my 0% balance card ?
Although I applied for a 0% balance transfer card, the card is just basically a normal credit card I can use for everything is this the case ?
If I would be facing hefty % for doing this can you let me know please.
I did think about changing the card to a purchase card, but that means new application, credit check and a basic £1200 limit, which would not cover my holiday, I have enough on my limit,to put the holiday full cost on there, and tbh I don't want to change my card or lender unless it's going to be very expensive using my card for this one thing.
i'd love to know if this type of card, is perfectly acceptable to use for what I now need it for.
Thanks in advance, advice would be helpful.

Yes, you can use the card. The new balance would be charged at your go to rate of interest.
A new card, with 0% on purchases, would help you save on interest. Why do you think that you would only get a £1200 limit? That would be very unusual for a decent 0% card. Are you sure you're not getting confused with representative examples?
However, if you're more comfortable paying interest than making a new application, just use your existing card.0 -
Thanks zx81 for taking time out of your day, to offer me advice, I appreciate it. As the total I would borrow for the holiday would be £6000, and i'd be paying back £500 a month, in theory it should be paid in full in 12 months-but then theres the interest at what rate I don't know, they will charge, i'll have to look into that in a minute. as for the £1200 limit, from what I've read when looking at cards being compared to eachother, that's generally the figure that's written as max limit, I guess as ii would be to them a new customer, and would have to build a record of repayments etc. I've now got a £8500 limit but that's because I've had my platinum card for quite a long time and that limit has been growing from a small limit to a big limit over years. as for the paying interest instead of new application-it all depends how much interst a month Barclaycard will charge, I consider £18 a month fair for that amount, I don't consider £35 a month fair, so I may move just depends on the charge per month to me.
just checked with barclaycards interest calculator tool, £6000 borrow, minimum monthly repayment £147.15 interest at 0.25% is £87.15 a month, so looks like I need a new card ! just hope I can apply on the application to set my own credit limit, or theres gonna be six very disappointed people in my house who can't now go to see Mickey M.0 -
£1200 is a representative example - it allows you to compare the cost of cards.
0% cards will tend to give limits in the thousands. For example, I got 14k on my last new card application.
Whatever the interest rate on your existing card, you'll be paying a lot more than £18. If your interest rate is even 1% a month - which would be an APR of something like 13-14%, which is very low - that equates to £60 interest in your first month. It could easily be in excess of £100, depending on your rate.0 -

You can't.
But that doesn't mean you won't get a suitable limit. Or at least one that will let you pay a large chunk of the holiday on it, with the rest out of savings or other means.0 -
Hello again. went online checked the platinum card, said it was a balance transfer & purchase card. so just so no mistake phoned india or Pakistan where I spoke to a rep of Barclays, who was very difficult to understand, he told me my platinum card can't be used for 0% purchases ! and despite never making a late payment etc, there was nothing he could do to help me-asked me what would I do, told him i'd have to look elsewhere, said sorry he couldn't help...again, and wished me a good evening.
I then did a compare purchase cards, and about a minute later was approved for a Tesco card, said still £1400, limit, then further in the online paperwork said limit will be revealed to you once card has arrived, so hopefully it will be nearer to what I need. So in the end loyalty to someone I had no problems with for years-resulted in me having to abandon ship as they only look after new customers with offers and the old timers can just vote with their feet. well that's business for you I guess.
BTW it wasn't any hassle at all, and i'm still going to zero my outstanding balance with them before I close the account with Barclays.0 -
To be fair, they need to make a little money along the way. Unlimited 0% offers for customers, with the associated costs of cards, statements and a call centre, is a good way to go out of business.0
