insuring a lease car for a child

I have a leased car currently insured by myself. I wish to hand my leased car to my daughter to use. But as she will be the main driver I want the policy in her name. I rang the lease company who said I MUST be the main driver. There is confusing info on the web about this and I'm not sure the young person I spoke to is right.

Any one with any knowledge on this?

I think what they were getting at is that your contract for your lease car stipulates that you must be the main driver.

Nothing to do with fronting. As such then you can not do what you wish without breaching the lease contract.

Are you sure that they didn't mean you had to be the policyholder?
All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.
  • Just had response to my query from the lease company.

"We are happy to confirm as per terms and conditions of your contract, you need to insure yourself and any authorised driver(s) against any claims for death, injury, loss or damage caused by the vehicle or its use.

What this means is that yourself and any persons you wish to drive the vehicle needs to have fully comprehensive insurance policy"

Nothing about who has to be the main driver or whos name the policy must be in. Or is it assumed it will be me the leasee?

you need to insure yourself and any authorised driver(s) against any claims for death, injury, loss or damage caused by the vehicle or its use.

I would read that as you need to insure the car.
  • Yes I see your point. Thanks for your reply

I would imagine, if your daughter wishes to be the main driver, then she would have to take over the lease from you, i.e. she'll then be responsible for the payments.

This would probably have a penalty to pay, if, indeed, it is allowed.

Possibly, depends on the terms and conditions. Some lease policies may allow you to transfer the lease to someone else, with or without a penalty.
