That looks looks the right machine.

Downloaded the drivers for 32-bit you linked to but it doesn't look like Windows likes them.

    The plot thickens.....
In device manager, under Network Adaptors, I've got SiS191 1000/100/10 Ethernet Device (which is apparently working correctly).
Under Other Devices, I've got (both with yellow exclamation marks):-
Ethernet Controller (which has a hardware ID of
    PCI\VEN168C&DEV001C&SUBSYS_10261A3B&REV_01
    PCI\VEN168C&DEV001C&SUBSYS_10261A33
    PCI\VEN168C&DEV001C&CC_020000
    PCI\VEN168C&DEV001C&CC_0200

Unknown Device which has a hardware ID of ACPI\ATK0100 followed by *ATK0100 on the following line

This machine will not connect to the internet.

Not sure which driver I installed did the trick but all is now sorted and the laptop is on-line.
Just finishing off installing all the extra bits (like an AV))

    Thanks for all the help.

Maybe I was a little premature.
The laptop will connect to the internet using a cable, but not wirelessly (it won't even see any wireless networks).

Wireless is definitely switched on but I think that's one of the missing drivers.

    Anyone any ideas?

yes, in situations like this, I use slimdrivers, don't think I've had it not find a driver yet..

    https://www.slimwareutilities.com/slimdrivers.php

don't download from download.com, there's a direct link under the green box. Make sure to do a custom install and don't accept avg toolbar or whatever else is offered and it's fine :)

I can't see a Wireless driver in FunTime's link, and he's usually very good.:)

In the past I've had trouble with an Easynote M5255 so feel your pain.
If you're feeling brave, there is a wireless driver listed HERE
I have successfully used https://driverscollection before, but only as a last resort. Use at your own risk.

    Found link at https://communities.intel.com/thread/61762
    Move along, nothing to see.

Packard Bell, IMHO, are one of the worst manufacturers to find drivers for, generally. Especially "official" ones..

A big thanks to one and all for the help on this.
The laptop is now on-line (both wired and wireless) and back with the original owner.

@GJ - I'll keep a note of the slimdrivers utility for future reference, seems to be very useful.

@Spud17 - I wasn't feeling that brave last night when I finally got the d@mn thing working properly.

On the good news side, it's now a lot quicker than it was but would probably benefit from some more RAM (it's only got 2GB installed) but that's a job for another day.
