Where did I say I can't afford to do more than one wash per week when I specifically said I am a single person who struggles to fill machine (and doesn't want to use machine more often than I need)

Technically this was the 2nd wash I did with them, did a quick wash when at parents last week which I believe was a lower temperature.

    Seriously?

Two person house hold here and I easily get through 4 washes a week

    Jeans and hubby's work clothes

    Sheets and duvets

    Towels and tea towels,cloths

All other clothing that's not white

If you seperate your washes, don't jam everything in one load, you might find the issues you have posted about before with your washing no longer occur

I think you're just going to write this off as an expensive but hard lesson about organising your washing. Those colour catch sheets can work but it's just adding to the cost and I doubt you'd be fully satisfied with the results.

I understand that as a single person you don't accumulate a lot of washing. Perhaps you'd be better off buying some extra linen and clothes then you could put off a wash until you had a load. I separate whites, darks and light coloureds here. Another alternative is to do a couple of quick washes rather than one long one each week. It'll be a lower temperature but unless you do really messy work most things don't get really dirty these days and just need freshening up.
  • I think you've probably seen the last of your white towels I'm afraid. Perhaps it would be worth actually dying the towels a darker colour with some Dylon - it would at least make them look like they were meant to have a colour. Just a thought :)

  • Doubt that you will ever get your white towels back, no matter what you do. I'd go with dying them a darker colour than whatever shade they have turned out now.

Tip for anyone with new jeans: before you wear new jeans, always soak them in vinegar and water to fix the colour. See http://jeans.about.com/od/Jeans101/a/How-To-Keep-Your-Jeans-From-Bleeding.htm

Plenty of salt in water also works before using

Oh, heck! Washing any dark coloured new garment with lights is asking for trouble!

Just doing one washing is false economy.

OP may be on a water meter and wanting to save money? Sadly as you say it's shown to be a false economy if by doing so the clothes have been ruined and will need replacing.

I always wash white and light-coloured towels together, but I have a dark-coloured towel which is a real pain to wash. It's been washed several times but the blue colour still seeps out, so I have to wash it with other blues (denim usually).

Past issues seem more to do with colour fade rather than clothes getting stained, and age of clothes.

I wish some of the colour washed out and onto my nice t shirt that is faded.
  • Hang your washing outside, inside out, to help prevent fading. Won't stop it for frequently worn items, but should delay it a bit.
