Any advice on negotiating with a dealer, for a "nearly new" car?

I think it's a bit late to try for any more price reductions now.

You seem to have made the mistake of first going for a 'discount' for paying cash, rather than trying to get the lowest final cost.

The world has changed - cash is no longer king - people are even suspicious of those who pay cash.

No-one wants you to pay cash - cash is the last thing that salesmen/woman want these days - and that applies to most things - not just cars.

Up until a couple of years ago I never even considered finance - didn't need it - I thought old-school.

Now I take every finance deal I can find - interest free periods etc.

I've used that approach for TVs, washing machine, fridge , etc.

I still pay everything off asap - and avoid interest payments - but I get a fair financial benefit from NOT paying cash.
  • Maybe... My rationale was to bater the cash price down as far as possible, then to ask about Finance, and if I could get a further discount, the idea being, the dealer benefits more from finance, so they would (ideally) pass some of that benefit onto me in the form of a finance contribution. It was an approach recommended by a few people and made sense to me.

It doesn't make any sense to me at all.

It may have been a good idea to try a few years ago when interest rates were different.

Definitely 'cart before the horse' IMHO

    Better luck next time.
