What does it mean that the keys are released?

Hi All,

I just got an email at 6 PM from my solicitors and can't reach anyone as they left home. I won't be able to sleep tonight.

Today was the completion date and everything has been carried out. The solicitor says the keys have been released but doesn't say when I can pick them up.

I am pleased to confirm that we have now completed the purchase of your apartment. Congratulations!

The developer's solicitors have also confirmed that the keys have been released.

My colleague X will now deal with the post-completion procedures of your purchase and will get in touch with you once the property is registered at the Land Registry. Due to the volume of applications and recent delays that we are experiencing at the Land Registry, kindly note that the registration process can take up to 6 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer.

As such, rest assured that we will advise you as soon as registration has been completed. Once the property has been registered we can then prepare a revised financial statement with a breakdown of the disbursements incurred and residual balance.

We will be in touch with you should anything further be required.

Can I move into a new build property only after it has been registered at the Land Registry? Or is that unrelated and can done after I moved into the new place?

Please help, I won't be able to sleep tonight :(

Keys released means you can collect the keys and move into your new home.

You can go to the EA and pick your keys up tomorrow. LR is irrelevant to you moving in.

Thank you both. Much appreciated. 8 weeks paying rent + mortgage would have been crazy.

What does EA stand for? :)

Assuming it is the EA who is holding the keys!

They may be held by the seller, or the developer (New Build) or left with the next-door-neighbour etc.

You should have checked before Completion day who is holding the keys.

Can't believe you hadn't made a plan to get the keys today lol

Good luck - its yours now, move in when you like (well, as soon as you've tracked the keyholder down)

Yes that was a poor assumption on my part, that it would be an EA. If it's new build the show home staff may well have it and I'd also expect them to give you a walk round to check for any issues.

Presumably you have already handed your notice in on where you live anyway?

You've been given the answers now, but I cannot understand why you were paying probably a large amount of money to your solicitor without asking all of these questions before completion day. If you go through the rest of your life with your eyes closed like that you're going to waste a lot of time, money and emotion.
