First adult passport

Hi, I had a passport when I was around 8 years old, but never had one since.

I've decided now I'm nearly 30 I want to try and conquer my fear of flying so want to get myself a passport.

Does anyone know whether this would be classed as a passport renewal application (I do still have my child passport)?

No, it would be classed as your first adult passport, as you are both now an adult and renewals can only happen within a certain time of the expiry of the previous passport.

Also, if you want to get over your fear of flying, I can suggest the fear of flying courses (they are wonderful, full day, and use a number of techniques to help you), which in my opinion are worth the money.
  • I would suggest calling the number on the passport renewal form to enquire as my partners passport ran out when he was 13, but we wanted to go away when he was 19 (so would be first adult passport) I thought this would be a first passport application - which would require interview etc, but the person on phone said coz he'd already had a child's one it was just a renewal so filled out the form and had his passport back 3 days later.

It used to be that the records were discarded after twelve years from the last renewal. With modern IT they may be kept longer. If you still have your old passport it might be worth submitting it for 'renewal' - but I am speculating a bit...

Thanks for your replies :) I have rang the passport office and they've confirmed that as long as I have my child passport then it is classed as a renewal.

Obviously need to get new photos as I look slightly different to what I did when I was 8! So now I need to try and find someone to sign them, which is going to be an headache.

There's quite a few professions that can sign them - https://www.gov.uk/countersigning-passport-applications/accepted-occupations-for-countersignatories has the list of who can sign your photos. Most people know a teacher, a civil servant, banker etc rather than the more known professions.

As well as the above, those that are members of professional bodies can sign too. So try anyone you know who works as an accountant or accounting technician, optometrist, engineer, physiotherapist, counsellor, dentist, etc. Anyone who has letters after their name (not for a degree but related to their field of work) is worth asking.

  • Thanks for your help everyone :) I have asked a family friend whos a primary school teacher and she is going to sign for me.

Just need to get my photos done today, get the form filled in and photo signed at the weekend then get it posted off.

Do people usually send applications off using Recorded or Special Delivery (Bearing in mind I am sending an old passport back with application too)

Delivery wise it is personal choice. I don't know if the post office still do the check and send service (used to be about £8 on top of the fee), but it gets sent special delivery and the staff check the form and photos to make sure they are passable. I've used the service previously (albeit in 2013!) and thought it was good value.
