Garage Ceiling - Ideas?

Hello
for a bit of context, Im almost done turning the back of the long garage we have in to a more usable utility space - we now have moved the boiler here, have the washer & dryer, a worktop for folding clothes on and some storage.

I have painted the walls white, and the floor has also been tiled - it actually looks pretty nice. The only thing left is the cieling - i was origionally goign to paint it but the coverage is aweful. The current ceiling is some kind of really absorbant wood, and there are unsightly gaps between the large pieces.

Im looking for a cheap and cheerful way to cover this - first thoughts were cloth- in some sort of nice colour but this isnt ideal. The I potentially though of old wood - to give it some character.

Does anyone have any ideas? Id like to do for less then £100 for materials. Im semi competent at basic DIY (cutting, drilling etc :rotfl:)

thanks

That really absorbent wood isn't asbestos is it?

I'm sure you could plasterboard it for less than £100 in materials.

If you have rooms above the garage the ceiling needs to be fireproof. You say the current one is timber so this does not tick that box.

  • Hi

I agree with Ruski etc - get tappered edge plasterboard and tape the joints. Then use something like Gyproc Easifill to fill all the joints/screw fixings etc. Suppliers like Travis Perkins or Chandlers are usually cheaper than the DIY sheds, but it depends on any being near to you, delivery charges etc.

I dry-lined my son's garage a few years back and did the ewall and ceiling. Never done it before (but I'm a fairly competent DIYer). I bought a wide spreader (wide enough to span the tapered part of the two boards butted together), plus a corner trowel. Both items can be had fairly cheaply. I found the easifill mixed and spread very easily and sanded down well.

I then emulsioned the walls and ceiling and I was very please with the outcome, receiving compliments along the way.

    Good luck.

I second the use of tapered edge plaster board. An easy job for a competent Diyer.
  • You could try PVC cladding, they come in plain and in a lot of different designs.

Polysytrene tiles were fashionable once, and people eventually became aware of the fire dangers. Horrific injuries occured and the authorities instigated danger warnings. Might the same happen on pvc cladding to ceilings?

I have taper edge boarded my cellar very easily but an even easier solution might be to caulk the unsighly gaps (level/smooth it with an old video card etc) prime it with an oil based primer and then paint it with oil based paint.
  • pvc cladding is almost certainly self extinguishing plastic so don't worry about fire risk. Just check with supplier. Plasterboarding is an easy job if you can see joists to screw into or your existing timber is strong enough to fix into. fixing it blind is a different prospect, you have to drill holes to find the supports.
