An Acer Iconia One 8 or Tesco Hudl 2 if you're looking at Android
A LENOVO Yoga Tab 3 or Linx 810b if you're looking at Windows.0 -

OP..
HP Stream, may be ideal, £30 off at Currys now, dropping it into your budget. 10 year old nephew has one and seems happy with it.

If computer use is really necessary for schoolwork I would be inclined to let the child use my own laptop (under supervision) and would hope the OP isn't going to give the child unsupervised access to the internet! Many parents do, alas.
OP you could do what I did and just get a second-hand one, cheap, or ask around if anyone's upgrading theirs and wouldn't mind letting your child have their old one :money:0 -
Geeky alternative:
Find a spare TV, keyboard and mouse, then buy this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Create-Raspberry-Official-Starter-Black/dp/B01EX61D1Q/ (Pick a different kit if you need a HDMI cable or a keyboard.. but you can probably pick them up for cheaper via the poundshop/fleabay)
Install Open Office and Firefox/Chromium. Instant homework tool
Mainstream option

This looks ok, and it's got a proper 500gb HD in it, rather than those trinkets with 32GB of storage. Windows 10 will be 'just about ok' on 4GB of RAM.0
