What does this MOT advisory mean?

"Brake hose has slight corrosion to ferrules offside front".
I have some notes in there about tyre tread depth which is obvious & the front subframe is listed as rusty which is obvious but what are these brake ferrules & how big is the job to sort that?

Basically the flexihose is deteriating0

A ferrule is a metal ring connected to the end of a flexible pipe/hose. The whole hose would need to be replaced.0

Thanks.
That's a strange one then. I had my brakes leak on me in a bad way a few months ago & had the car in to be fixed, which it was. That was O/S front too.
My brakes had been making a bit of noise when braking from 55/60, like a very deep bass/tone/noise. I have a stainless steel catback exhaust on anyway so it's a little louder than standard although i opted for the mid silencer to quieten it down a bit but it was much louder than normal.
Had the brakes sorted out to pass the MOT just today & when i picked the car up the brake pedal is super stiff now. It brakes, but just the pedal is quite stiff.0 -
It means that there's slight corrosion to the ferrules of the driver's side front brake flexi-pipe.
Ok, that's not much help. Each of the front brake calipers is fed by a rubber flexi-pipe that has a metal connecting ferrule crimped on each end so that it can be screwed onto the rigid pipes at one end and the caliper at the other.
Those ferrules are showing some corrosion (usually of the crimped band) but not to the point that they're likely to fail. It's a CYA advisory to show they've been examined.
Either leave alone or brush clean and treat with rust converter if you're really worried - don't do what I've seen occasionally and grease them because grease may affect the rubber pipe.0 -

Thanks guys, i get what it is now.
I wonder why it is that my brake hoses are constantly going. A year or two ago i needed a new copper line installed, then there was more earlier this year. This car failed the MOT on the first take because the brake test popped off 3 lines as they'd corroded that badly.
Not having the best of times as far as brakes are going.
I've had the car just 3 days short of 8 years & it's served me well. Hopefully it'll run for a few more years yet.0 -
Most OEM brake pipes do corrode in the end and when they get to that age they tend to come in a rush because they've all been exposed to similar conditions for a similar time.
"Slightly corroded" ferrules really aren't something to worry about - they're not going to fail and they're not going to deteriorate all that fast. If the hoses themselves were aging / perishing then it's likely that a tester who advised the ferrules would also have advised the hoses.0 -
Just clean off any loose rust with a wire brush (carefully) or a strip of emery cloth, and paint with metal paint (hammerite/aldi etc.)
When they corrode severely they come apart and the rubber hose could come off in an emergency, as it will only be held on by the ridges on the connector.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
