APCOA parking fine - Travelodge Newcastle

On 11/08/2016 at 17:47:05, I entered the car park as I was dining in a nearby restaurant, something I've done many times as it is open to non guests for a charge.
I parked and walked to the machine to pay by card like I have done many times. One machine was out of order, ok, however the other machine was unfortunately not taking card payments. Awesome. The one part of town where there is no card machines. Oh well, I figured that the hotel would be aware of this and no problems would occur.
I have now received a parking charge notice from APCOA, date of issue 07/09/206 stating a charge of £60 is payable but if I pay before 14 days, it's £30.
I spoke to Travelodge support who advised me that 'I shouldn't have parked there as I wasn't a guest' and 'because I'm not a guest I'll need to discuss it with APCOA'.
What should I do? Thanks in advance!
