I normally recommend the HSBC and/or Nationwide offerings for under 16/18's - as they tend to pay reasonable interest rates and can be used online.

However, I'm surprised you would get a cheque book at 14 from Natwest..

    Thanks for replying.

I have a HSBC branch in my town and also a Nationwide one has just opened (where Portman bs was before the takeover) What is my best option ? I know Nationwide open on Saturday mornings, unsure of HSBC.

With NatWest I currently get 3.15 % , not too bad for a current account.

Yes I was surprised when I got the cheque book, I opened the account when I was 12. My friend who is the same age also got one when he opened his one month after I opened mine.

    Regards

HSBC seem to pay 5.75% and will give you a debit card. This should tell you if your local branch is open on Saturdays

The Nationwide Smart account pays 6.04% and is technically a savings account but they will give you a cash card that can be used at any cash machine.

Both also offer internet access so you can check your balance any time and offer discounts/special offers from retailers if that interests you.

You would really need to decide which is suitable for you, depending on what you use your account for and which branch is better for you to get too.. - I don't think either offer cheque books!

The links in my first post go the relevant pages on the different bank websites

HSBC seems my best option, however my branch isn't open on Saturdays, but the internet banking facility is a big plus. Isn't NatWest going to change rules so I can use online banking when i'm under 16 as their current rule is over 16's can use it ? Think somebody mentioned this on here when I was browsing ?

I use my debit card in shops and online so Nationwide won't be suitable.

I rarely use my cheque book, only sent a few since having the card.

    Thanks
    Brad
  • I never know NatWest issued Cheque Books for under 16's?
It says over 16 on there site.

I was not aware that I would get a cheque book, one just arrived soon after opening the account. My friend also got one for his account.

NatWest website says that internet banking is for 16 and overs, is a shame as I am happy with them other than no internet banking for my age.

Think HSBC will be my best option, can HSBC cards be used in all other ATM's like I can use my NatWest card

Yes, i think HSBC's Solo Card (like NatWest) can be used in all ATM's that display the solo, LINK or HSBC logo.

  • I would recommend Nationwide, stick with Building Societies.Banks tend to have more and higher charges. Also Nationwide is the best when abroad, useful in a couple of years time when you are living it up in Ibiza,Majorca etc
I have a deep burning indifference

In my opinion, I would recommend LTSB, as their interest rate is 3.3% from £1 over. According to moneysupermarket.com, this account is the top.

Sorry but whats so special about 3.3% when I can get an account with HSBC that pays nearly 6 % ?
