I nearly fed a catterpillar to my girlfriend at the weekend (yes, by accident - I did wash the kale before cooking, must have missed it).
She wasn't too impressed and spent the rest of the meal inspecting every cm of kale!!
We've learnt from our 1st year errors to make a wooden/cane frame to put netting/fleece over for next year.
Broccoli and kale recovered, cabbage went as did swede (leaves were eaten) and sprouts don't look like they'll produce any now.0 -
Can I put in a word for sweet potatoes, after my first year of growing them? I am really pleased with the size of the crop, and nothing attacked them. They are related to bindweed and grow with the same vigour and rather pretty purple and white flowers.
My daughter had an old sweet potato growing sprouts last winter, so I pulled them off, put them in water while they grew roots, potted them, and planted them out in mid-May with some sticks to twine up.
Before the first frost was predicted, I picked off the tips of the plants and put them in water, and they are rooting very well already. I'll pot them up soon and be ready for next year's crop.0
