When you're in central London you can find most attractions near tube stations using this tube map. But better still use the buses (sit on the top deck and enjoy the view)- your 9yo will love the view!. These are some of the ones that show you the touristy bits (they're just ordinary buses so you use your Oyster card), and maybe use this website to find stuff to do.
and this one to find the shops.
You may not need to get an Oyster card if you have a contactless bank card but mine never works!

Another vote here too for Edinburgh. I love christmas lights and have been for overnight stays in London and Edinburgh over the years. This year we are not bothering with London and going back to Edinburgh. Once the christmas tree lights get turned on in London I found that any hotel near Oxford Street seemed to rocket in price even on a Monday night which I would have thought is a cheap day of the week to stay. If you do go to London Fortnum and Mason had good christmas displays.
Edinburgh is more compact and you can get a hotel that is near Princes Street which is the main shopping street. I have stayed in the Doubletreeby Hilton and Macdonald Holyrood which are both not too far from the action. There is a large christmas market on Princes Street as well as a funfair and streets near Princes Street also having various festive attractions.0 -
I absoulutly hate London in december - everything is overpriced, everybody is angry and miserable and it is usually grey and wet. I also believe there is little to buy that you can't get elsewhere. Maybe I am just a bit of a miserable git0

I like Covent Garden near Christmas, as there's usually a band playing or choir singing at weekends, the shops look beautiful with the lights and decorations, and you can get mulled wine and roast chestnuts from the stalls.0
