Currys disingenuous about product availability

Just a warning for others - we ordered an electric oven with Currys on July 11. At the time, the website was showing the item being available.

Currys took payment and we received an order confirmation where it said expected delivery time 2-4 weeks. A bit long, but we were OK with it as we were busy moving in to the new house.

Four weeks later, I called Currys up and asked about the delivery. They said that the item should be with us within 2-4 weeks. Do you see a pattern forming?

We went on holiday and when we came back seven weeks had passed since placing the order. I called them again and after they told me that the item would be with us within 2-4 weeks, I asked to file a complaint and cancel the order. I was told the money would be refunded within 5 working days.

So - don't expect Currys to actually have items they advertise, and expect them to sit on your money while they play a waiting game to see how much patience you have before you cancel and ask for your money back.

The word you need in the title in "disingenuous". I actually had something similar with John Lewis where the delivery time was constantly changing, although I didn't let it go on as long as you did but cancelled after a couple of weeks, got a gift voucher for the hassle they'd caused, and bought elsewhere (Currys/PCWorld as it happens as they could supply it the next day).

I noticed when I bought my cooker a few years ago (Hotpoint) that a lot of shops don't seem to hold stock of a lot of the big items anymore and they must order direct from the manufacturer for each order they receive. This seems to add quite a lot of time onto the delivery times and can cause issues with stock levels when they are controlled by another company.

In my case the exact one I wanted was on a 6-8 week delivery turnaround everywhere else but 4-6 weeks with Currys, I bought it from them and it was delivered to me by Hotpoint themselves 5 weeks later. Helped by the fact I had my brother's family discount so brought it down to less that the other sellers too.
  • When it comes to currys stock levels are and always have been utterly awful.
These days if i have to shop there (in store this is) i always ask the members of staff, i am looking for (insert product discription) can you tell me which items you have in stock here at the branch. I find it saves time on p[icking an item then being told 10 mins later its not in stock and rinse and repeat that 2-3 before you realise HOW to play the game.
With Ovens im afraid i avoid Currys full stop, been bitten twice now so AO get my custom, brilliant service.

  • I had this with currys last week, reserved a laptop online went down to the store an hour later to be told it was out of stock and they won't be getting anymore. Ended up spending an extra £130 on the same specs but different model laptop. Which took way over an hour for them to find there was 1 left in stock according to the system things they use, then whilst we was waiting for them to bring it up another couple was interested in the same laptop and they started the same fiasco all over again knowing that I'd just paid for the last one.

Never again. 2 people working on the floor on a Saturday afternoon.

Oh, they missed a trick there, I thought I was going to read "told the money would be refunded within 2 -4 weeks."
