Claiming on contents insurance for a mobile phone

Hi apologies if this is in the incorrect category. I dropped my phone and it won't turn on - tried all 'at home' solutions and none worked.

Apple have quoted me £279 to repair/replace, I have checked with HSBC and I'm covered under my home/contents insurance. My excess is £100, so I'll pay that and HSBC will cover the remaining £179.

My issue is now that will affect my no claims discount, and my premiums. They couldn't tell me how much my premiums will go up by. I've also read that when shopping around for insurance in the future, having a claim even a small one, can affect the quotes I receive.

Is it worth making the claim?

Thanks

  • We made a claim on our house insurance in 2012 - total cost was about £20k due to localised subsidence. Our insurance with the same providers has gone up by a few £'s per year since then, but not much. We have, though, found it difficult to find a cheaper quote, and expect so for a few years. I'm not aware of any no claims discount with home insurance, but I'm sure that it will affect new quotes. Basically, is the potential increase in insurance cost going to be more than you get back through the claim? Depends what you pay now. Did you have any separate phone insurance with the phone?

Thanks, I only pay £10 max per month for my home/contents now, and don't have separate phone insurance. When I spoke to the bank today they said I'll definitely lose my no claims, so not sure if it's worth it to receive £179?
  • You could try doing an online quote with one of the comparison sites, with and without the relevant period of no claims - see what the difference is.
