Thomson package holiday - illness advice please?

Hi, never posted on here before but was hoping for some advice.

Currently on holiday in Majorca with my husband and two and a half year old son. Staying in a hotel booked as part of an all-inclusive package holiday through Thomson. Two days in, in the middle of the night I had awful stomach cramps and severe diarrhoea and vomiting. My son also woke up in the night and was sick in his bed and had diarrhoea.

Went down to the Thomson rep first thing in the morning after my husband and son had been to breakfast (I wasnt feeling well enough and my son was sick all in the restaurant) and to be fair to her, she was quite sympathetic and told me that when I was feeling better to go and fill out a form.

I went down later in the afternoon when I felt well enough and was met by the 'Team Leader' who had zero customer service and explained to me that while it was 'unfortunate' that myself and my son were ill that 'it's just part of life and is to be expected' ... So he was clearly useless.

On the way back to the hotel room, my son was sick in the hallway so we took him straight to the doctor on site who diagnosed him with gastroentritis and wrote us a prescription for some medicine. Touch wood my son is much better now.

Yesterday however, my husband came down with severe diarrhoea and sickness and I had the griping stomach pains again.

I can understand it may be par for the course to have a bit of a dodgy tummy on holiday but what can I do with regards to our rights? The doctor told us that we cannot use the pool facilities whilst we have symptoms (obviously a main part of the holiday) so I want to know if anyone has had prior experience of this and what the outcome was?

I managed to find the original rep I spoke to and she filled out a stomach illness form that will supposedly be sent to Head Office.

TIA.

  • Is it just your family or are other guests also ill? If it's only your family then at only 2 days into your holiday, it could be something you picked up before you got there.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world
  • I believe it has to be 3 days into a all inclusive holliday prior to them taking it seriously, Still the rep on the ground will be nye on useless and this needs dealing with direct at source.

Do you think that the illness is the fault of the hotel? If so, ensure that you get written confirmation from the doctor... and find out whether any other guests have the same problem (if so, that would suggest that there is a problem with hygiene in the kitchen).

Otherwise, you will be looking at your travel insurance. Document that you were unable to use the pool (although it is obvious that this is a simple matter of protecting the health of other guests).

Could have caught a bug swimming in the hotel pool, or in the sea.
Could have caught it touching something, a door handle, a banister rail, not washing hands before eating.

You should always take medicated hand gel on holidayabroad, and use it often.
  • I am pretty certain it is from the hotel but not sure if its the food, or like others have said the pool. But we hadn't left the complex before we got ill so it won't be from anywhere else if we have gotten ill here.

Luckily the kind receptionist at the Drs reduced our insurance excess from €75 to €30 and the medicine wasn't much so not sure if its worth pursuing on the travel ins.

Spoken to few other families who have thankfully been fine as there are a few pregnant women.

Been able to enjoy today and touch wood will be fine for the rest of the holiday and able to make the most of it. Thanks for your replies.

I noticed it half an hour or so ago, but had a blond moment thinking I was on TA, and so timed out from editing.;)
