Foreign tv?

Options
I'd like to be able to watch foreign tv, mainly French, though North American would be a bonus. I could get a vpn service to watch programmes on my PC or iPad, but ideally I'd like to watch it on a real TV.

I do have a smart TV running freeview on an aerial with a wifi connection to the router. Is there any way I can install a vpn on the TV?

I am thinking of getting a second tv for another room. Should I maybe think about getting free sat? Would a freesat machine be capable of picking up European signals? Or does the satellite have to be aligned differently? Not terribly keen on having yet another thing attached to the building, a vpn seems a better solution.

  • If you point a dish at the Hotbird satellite at 13E (a normal sky minidish is big enough where I live in the south of England) or get a motorised one you can get Italian channels as several RAI channels are broadcast in clear in SD, plus there are a couple of French channels in clear as well. The main French channels are on a different satellite (don't remember which) and are encrypted.

You can get streaming of all the telefrance channels for £6.99/month from the http://telefrance.co.uk site

As a creator of intellectual property myself, I won't advise you about mechnisms for bypassing copyright or regional licensing restrictions, such as VPNs.

Telefrance looks good, thank you. I'm happy to pay for access, but the mechanism to do it has to be there and telefrance looks as though it solves that problem (I create intellectual property too).

Isn't TV5Monde available free to air on any dish that's set up for Sky/Freesat?

You need to get a box that works for that country and have your dish set to the correct satellite.

The other less drastic options are to see if Sky provision for them or buy an openbox.
