Coriander help!!

If anyone experienced in growing coriander can give me any advice, I would be very grateful!

I bought a coriander plant the other day from Waitrose and when I got it back and took it out of the plastic wrapper, it flopped all over the place. Is there anything I can do to revive it, or do I just have to accept my plant is (already ) on the way out?! I'm tempted to cut it back down to the new shoots/leafs, but don't want to destroy it any more than I have to!

I've never had any success in trying to keep supermarket herb plants going, but the ones I've sown from seed have all been great!

I'd use the one you've got there for cooking and go get some seeds to grow your own. I've got some just coming up now from seeds I put in a week or two ago :)

PS Just reminded me I bought a sage plant from Homebase a few weeks ago and that has died since planting it in my herb tub :( I've cut it right down and fingers crossed it might come back but I'm not holding my breath!

Thanks for the advice :o I'll see if my local plant shop has any seeds and give them a go.

I suppose there is one bright side- when my current coriander plant finally bites the dust, at least I'll have a spare pot left in which grow a new one! :p

    Hi Aliiyn,

Supermarket herbs won't survive in the containers they're bought in. They contain virtually no soil and the ones I've come across are filled with a sandy like substance.

I've managed to keep supermarket herbs going by repotting (into a bigger pot) with some decent compost almost immediately you bring them home. Water well and give them a bit of TLC for a few days and they can give surprising results.

Saying that I do agree with Chameleon, herbs grown from seed are very easy to do and much more rewarding.

    Hi

I agree with all the above; try repotting and if you do - some fertiliser could go a long way to assisting. If the stalks are still looking lackluster, cut them back and use in soup/dinner. then, don't over water [just keep it damp], and somewhere warm [not hot] and you should see new shoots soon.

I grow mine from seed and treat them very mean and get great strong tasting coriander - i let some go to seed every year and it pops up all over the place next year. i use it with carrots and various other veg to keep bugs away so can't get enough of the stuff.

    Good luck
  • If you use coriander a lot when you cook, you can get massive bunches of the stuff from ethnic grocers for the same price a tiny packet will cost from the supermarket.
  • This is the one thing I just can't keep alive. Basil, Sage, etc, no problem but even my corriander from seed just keels over. Maybe I'll try it in the bedroom east facing rather than the kitchen (west) based on Zazen999s advice. I'm on my tenth plant something has to work

the reason the supermarket plants flop all over the place is that there are loads of little plants far too close together, so they shoot up very fast all competing for light ... fine for cutting what you need then throwing away, but not much else
even if you separate them & pot them on they'll never make good sturdy plants as they've had a bad start & will be all 'leggy'

as the others have suggested, better sowing & growing your own, or buy in bunches from an ethnic grocer
