Paying for holiday on credit card

Hi all,
I'm going to book a holiday for myself and my OH to NY tomorrow through Expedia (flight and hotel)
We have the money saved aside for this holiday but I want to pay it all on my credit card so we are covered if Expedia goes bust. My limit is £1,200.00 the holiday is just over £2,000.00 total. If I pay the extra on to my credit card and effectively put it in credit would this work?
Also would anyone recommend the insurance with Expedia or would you go to another company?
Thanks in advance,
LC x

It depends on the card provider as to accepting it as a transaction as I have numerous cards and pay them by online transfer of which on a couple of occasions have paid a balance off in full to find out it was the wrong card and then left it in credit, Was not an issue for me and was used the following month but in several smaller transactions due to being quite a large amount.0

I have had it twice where I have paid off my balance in full and then received a refund which put me in credit. And the other time I manually paid my balance off a day before my DD and was charged twice this was for only £90 though but again no problem0

If Expedia will take two separate payments to cover the full amount then problem solved, you only have to put 1p on the credit card to have S75 cover for the total cost.0

Unfortunately there's only one option for payment0

Can you telephone them? They might be more flexible about taking payment over the phone.
Equally, can you telephone your credit card provider?
On the insurance, I can only suggest that you compare Expedia's offering with the best buy available elsewhere. It is unlikely that insurance sold by a travel agent will offer as good value as travel insurance sold separately, but until you have checked you will not know.0 -
I think it has to be £100 minimum to have S75 protection on the whole value. If Expedia will take two separate payments to cover the full amount then problem solved, you only have to put 1p on the credit card to have S75 cover for the total cost.
Edit: Disregard this - agrinall's put me straight!0 -

I have just transferred extra money onto my credit card and it has gone through ok.
Regarding paying part of debit my OH colleague booked a holiday firm that went bust and they got back the monies paid via credit card fairly easy but the monies they paid on debit card they are still trying to claim back.
Obviously that is just a worse case scenario but I wouldn't want to risk putting 1p/£100 on the C/C and paying the rest on D/C probably being over protective but it's a lot of money!
Thank you everyone - when I book and the payment clears I will post again in case anyone else is debating doing it this way0 -

If you book quickly, before the CC company has the chance to return the credit to you, it should be fine.
As to your colleague, sounds like he has gone about it the wrong way, he should have claimed the whole amount from his credit card.0
