Nationwide confirmed to me in a tweet today that if bankruptcy is showing on credit file you cannot be upgraded from FlexBasic to a normal current account such as the flex account.

Your post title is very misleading as it suggests that Nationwide never upgrade FlexBasic accounts - when they do in some instances.

I also note the the small angry face - I don't think they've been unreasonable in only providing a basic account to ex-bankrupts.

  • Apologies if title misled anyone. I have amended for accuracy.

I had previously been told upgrades could be done on FlexBasic's after a year or so of bankruptcy... so their policy is no upgrades whilst any insolvency is on credit file now.

Although it'd be nice to get the full account, the basic account nationwide offer is pretty good, being one of the few banks to give contactless, apple and android pay as standard for instance.
  • I agree, I just hate that they have to put FlexBasic on it, so everyone sees you have a basic account

Doesn't necessarily tell them that you can't get a full account. I recall a post here where someone had declined an upgrade as the FlexBasic means that unpaid item fees can't be charged.

When using contactless you can always hold the card over the FlexBasic part.

FlexBasic sounds better than Cash Card I think, which was the former basic account.
  • I think most banks would not open any current accounts if you are still in bankruptcy.

They're not allowed to prevent you opening a basic account (obviously barring any fraud misdemeanours) Agreed on the full facilities current account.

When you insert it into the ATM, inside your wallet/purse, when you put it in the chip and pin machine or in the few seconds you hold it over the contactless reader?
