I think I would just pop round, explain that you have started to hear it and ask whether they have recently moved their speakers or bought a new sound system, and if so, whether they could move them or otherwise reduce the noise. All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)0

That's one thing that's puzzling me actually TBagpuss, I've been in the house and as far as I can see there is no stereo, certainly no obvious speakers anyway! Their TV is on the wall between the two houses, I figured maybe it was just the sound travelling from that but I never hear actual TV noise. So if that's the case they must be really ramping it up for the music?0

As TBagpuss says have an informal but friendly chat with them and bring up the noise level in conversation. It puts it on their radar as being an issue, and if they are good and mindful neighbours it gives them an opportunity to correct it.
If they don't sort it out day time noise levels can be complicated to resolved as it is not unsocialable hours so your local Council/Environment Health would have a hard time taking action. If it is just music or TV that is on occasion too loud best to suck up it as your next neighbours could be far worse!0 -
The problem ofcourse is that any noise complaint during day time hours is unlikely to have any solution.
They are with-in their right to have music on during sociable hours0 -
Have they got an elderly relative visiting who is deaf?0

That's what I've tried to explain to my partner (I've read many a horror story on here and experienced real nasty neighbours when I was younger) but he has a few other niggles that wind him up too, so I think this feels a little like the final straw for him. I had it yesterday before school, it's on again now and has been for over an hour. The bass actually hurts my head which is hilarious considering I'd happily stand front row at a full on rock gig and have a great time. I wonder how much soundproofing costs these days?0

Exactly my thinking. Although I don't know why it needs to be as loud as it is?
Like you say it may not actually be loud, just transmitting through the walls.
Noise can be amplified quite significantly as it vibrates through the building.
I suspect if you mention it, they may be shocked that they've caused a problem.
But tread carefully, as it could get worse if you go in ham fisted.0 -

This is why I've been reluctant. My mom used to complain that my music was too loud when I could barely hear it upstairs, only to find it thumping downstairs. But if that's the case why do we never hear the noise from your average TV programs? Last time I was round the TV was on fairly loud, but I couldn't hear it once I got home.0
