The hard way but more versatile.

The easy way

However no substitute for a proper backup to an external drive.
I have a backup, but its when you need to fix silly things they have done to it and you find they have disabled the USB ports and killed the DVD drive etc. At least i can get a working windows partition and repair a lot of it through that. I find its better than boot CDs etc.
A little while back a windows 7 update killed optical drive drivers.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
So... you're trying to change the Windows 10 boot manager settings?
Does this help:

Basically yes, but how can i add the 2nd partition? I have seen all that about adding the safe mode menu but howto add the 2nd bootable partition? Which was not installed but cloned?
And to a previous post, although i have a backup i often find they have wrecked the windows install but NEED certain programs or files to be kept safe. My method can save quite a bit of time and can give them a lifeline if they need access before i can get there to sort it.
With older versions it was easy. Copy the first line and add in the correct partition number to boot from.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

Not much use in the the event of a HDD failure, another very handy tool for the situations you are discussing is this:

All you are doing is trying to make a bootable clone of the currently installed OS, I think you are going about things the wrong way IMHO.
You need to have a closer look at the links I posted earlier, they are not tools for backing up to an external drive.
PS beware hybrid shutdown and a locked drive if the system is set up that way.Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Run a live Linux distro and use GParted?
Did just this the other night on my (now) dual boot laptop. Allowed me to add, remove and extend current partitions on the fly.
****Be aware that I managed to kill the W10 MBR the first time I tried this. Not so much of an issue as I don't use the lappy for storage, but might be an idea to backup anything important before trying.
edit: Actually I'm not sure this will have any effect on the way Windows labels the drive/s. May not be the best option for what you are trying to achieve.0
