house renevations.

My house got flooded out ,we have been dried out now for 8 weeks , essentially we was in a hotel , we left the hotel to go home on the understanding that , work would commence on the property as soon as it was dry, thus being 2 weeks after we left the hotel . The property dried out ,1 week later we was informed that the company that had been allocated to us had now been moved to another area so they would appoint another firm , we had to wait 3 weeks for the appointment .
The buildings loss adjuster visited the house with the building contractor now 4 weeks ago , at the time we was informed that work would commence in 2 to 3 weeks time, and that work would take 8 weeks to complete , 4 weeks has now passed , i have been in touch with the builings firm , they won`t talk to me they advise me to talk to the buildings loss adjuster he won`t return my phone calls .
Having now this morning spoken to the flood team, now they are stating that its realistic that work would not commence anytime soon on my property and that next april would be a realistic finish time on the work.
I have no bathroom ( only toilet and basin ) no kitchen at all , no heating , 2 young children and a 6 month old baby , they told us we would be a priority. Could anyone offer my any good advise please .

  • Hi - sorry to read about your flooding and right now it must be an absolute nightmare with winter approaching.

According to their website Halifax cover alternative accommodation costs up to £20000.Your time in the hotel would have been paid under this heading. Now that you know it could be April before the work is finished if I were in your position without heating kitchen or bathroom I would consider that your house is not habitable for a young family like yours.

I suggest that you point this out to Halifax and that they should cover the cost of renting a furnished flat or house locally. If by any chance your front garden is big enough for a caravan ask Halifax to arrange to hire one or buy a second hand one.Other large insurance companies have bought considerable numbers of caravans.
