Insurance renewal following car theft

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate the measured advice and useful words typical of this board.

My previous car was stolen and written off at the end of January this year. This was a fifth hand '03 VW Golf. I received around £2300 from my insurer, Admiral, and overall I was quite happy with the pay out and how Admiral, the police etc had dealt with the situation. At the time, my insurance had until October 6 to run.

Following the pay out, I purchased an '05 VW Passat (perhaps third hand, I'd need to check but it isn't massively relevant) and this is my current car. I am using the insurance that I had on my previous car, and this runs out on October 6.

Following ringing up Admiral intermittently over the last few months they have confirmed that my insurance is going to be round the £750 mark (this is after I phoned up and had it reduced from £850). This is an uplift of about £400 on my previous insurance policy with the VW Golf.

This is difficult for me to afford at this point, so I have shopped around but unfortunately Admiral appear to be the most competitive insurer. This is frustrating because I have not had any incidents before and my driving record is clean.

Are there any other tactics that I can employ to get a reduction on this quote from Admiral? Their only suggestion was that I try and see if I can get a reduced quote from someone in the Admiral family, and then let them know about it. No one in the Admiral family is offering a lower quote.

Any ideas are appreciated. I have done a skim of this forum by searching for "theft" and haven't seem to come up with anyone similar.

Thanks

Tom

Do a dummy quote, not in your name etc using incognito mode on chrome (Insurers store and track quotes and don't like you playing around with quotes as they find it suspicious).

You may find it's cheaper to keep your car on the road or drive (If it's in the garage at the moment).

You may find it cheaper to add on another driver especially if they are your partner or possibly parent. Make sure you declare any claims or convictions they have

I'm quite surprised that the total loss claim from the car which was stolen didn't lead the policy to be terminated by Admiral, and that you could transfer the remainder of the policy to the replacement car.

The premium will inevitably be higher - the replacement car is larger and newer, quite probably a higher insurance group - and you now have a claim on your record.

All insurers would do the same.

    It's the norm!

No, thanks for pointing this out and correction on my post. My policy was terminated on total loss, but Admiral insured me on the new car and pro-rated what the remained of the insurance at the same rate for what I had left.. If this makes sense.
